Wednesday June 20th was a big night for Defending The Blue Line in Minnesota. DTBL hosted an NHL Players charity hockey game that night at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus.
The list of hockey talent included: Ryan Malone, Matt Hendricks, Jimmy Obrien, Gigi Marvin, Aaron Boogaard, Kyle Okposo, Staphane Veilleux, Nate Prosser, Chad Rau, Shjon Podein, Mark Parrish, Jamie McBain, Drew Stafford, Zach McKelvie, Casey Borer, Dan Sexton, Taylor Chorney, Jordan Parise, and Jeff Taffe. Also present to sign autographs were the Wild’s Josh Harding, and future HOF’er Zach Parise.
Mixed in with all these stars were service members from the MN Air National Guard on “Team East” and MN Army National Guard on “Team West”. With a little over 4 minutes to play the Army side was down by a goal and needed to dig deep. They tied it up and then pulled ahead with just minutes remaining. Air Force pulled their goalie with a minute to play trailing by 1. It had all the makings of a playoff over time nail bitter, but Army deposited an empty netter that sealed the victory for Team West, 7-5.
Special thanks to Gander Mountain for presenting our charity hockey game, and to KFAN Sports Radio for promoting it!
Before the game, 80 Military kids (ages 6-18) signed up to skate for an hour with a select group of NHL Players. There was 1/2 hour of instruction, and then a scrimmage.
Player worn jerseys were autographed and auctioned off after the game and all fans were entered into a raffle for Minnesota Wild Camo Sweaters, Wild game tickets and other fabulous prizes.
Defending The Blue Line is excited for this opportunity to further help military families and celebrate the service of our military heroes. Keeping the kids of military families focused and active in hockey is a great way to help keep their minds off of a parent’s upcoming deployment.
